□Natural environment
〖Geographical position〗 Zhaoyuan lies to the northwest of Shandong peninsular, between 120.08 to 120.38 degrees east longitude and between 37.05 and 37.33 degrees north latitude. There is the city of Qixia in the east, Laizhou in the west, Laixi bordering on with Zhaoyuan in the south, Longkou in the north, and Bohai with 13.5km.coastline in the northwest. The total area of the whole city is 1433.18sq.km.s.
〖Topography and physiognomy〗 Located in east low mountains and hills area of glue , the mountain area and hills account for 32.9% and 38.4% of the whole area respectively. The hillocks are rolling, and the gullies are vertical and horizontal. The relief Northeast, middle part and western part are on the high side, and the mountain range of Luoshan in the Northeast is the highest where the altitude of the highest peak reaches 759meters. There are 21 hilltops above 500meters altitude around the highest peak, and the hills and mountains are green and the peaks rising one higher than another.
There are more than 160 rivers with 11 drainage basins, most of which are the short urgent season rivers divided into the Bohai sea river system and Huanghai Sea river system. Dagu River with 48km.s long is the largest river and the Jiehe drainage basin is the largest drainage basin. There are over 51 rivers whose trunk stream’s length is above 5meters.
The coastline is slightly concave in shape, all of which belong to sand shore shaped by the sea. It is fine and smooth and belongs to the natural bathing beach. The reefs abound with sting joins, torpedo fish, prawns and crabs.
〖Climate〗 The climate in Zhaoyuan belongs to the warm monsoon of temperate zone district continental moist climate. The four seasons are clearly demarcated and the illumination is sufficient with annual average temperature of 11. 5 centigrade and annual average rainfall 671.1 mm. There is no severe cold in winter and no sweltering summer heat in summer. In spring and autumn, it is sunny but not hot, the humid air is clean, the wind-force is soft, and this is especially suitable for the producing of Longkou vermicelli.

□Historical evolution
As a state of ceremonies, Zhaoyuan belonged to Qi in the ancient. During Tang Dynasty it was called Luofeng town of Yexian named with Luoshan, used for more than 500 years. Since 1131 it has been named as Zhaoyuan county with the definition of “ZhaoXieHuaiYuan”, which means calling the vagrant from afar together to go back to the township to plough agriculturally. The jurisdiction changed a lot. During the period of Ming and Qing dynasty, Zhaoyuan belonged to Laizhou office and Dengzhou office, and during the period of the Repbulic of China it belonged to Jiaodongdao. In 1941 Zhaoyuan was divided into Zhaonan and Zhaobei in order to provide convenience for the resistance. In1951 Zhaonan and Zhaobei were combined again as Zhaoyuan county, which was successively under the jurisdiction of North Lake district, Laiyang prefecture, and Yantai prefecture. In 1983, Zhaoyuan became the jurisdiction county of yantai. In March of 1992, Zhaoyuan dismissed from the county and set up the city, directly under the jurisdiction of Shandong Province, and Yantai managed on behalf of Shandong.

□Administrative division
Covering 724 administrative village, Zhaoyuan has the following areas under its jurisdiction: the Economic Development Zone, 3 subdistrict offices—Luofeng, Quanshan, and Mengzhi, 10 towns—Canzhuang, Xinzhuang, Zhangxing, Jinling, Linglong, Fushan, Biguo, Xiadian, Qishan and Daqinjia, among of which Fushan has the largest area—195.92 square meters, and Zhangxing has the most administrative villages—91.

□Nationality and Population
In the year 2002, Zhaoyuan had a population of 572.3 thousand, in which nonagricultural population is 106.1 thousand and agricultural population is 466.2 thousand, averaging 399/sq.km. The proportion between males and females is 99.92:100. The birth rate is 8.31‰ and natural growth rate of the population is 0.65‰. There are 23 minorities, such as Manchu, Hui, Mongolia, Chuang, Korea, etc. in the whole city with 680 people.

□Comprehensive Strengths
Zhaoyuan owns tremendous strength in economic. It was listed 70th in the 1st, 65th in the 2nd and 41st in the 3rd.In 2002, China’s GNP was 11 billion, increasing 15.8% than 2000. The percentage of primary, second and third industry is 6.2:60.6:33.2.The local financial income is 330 million. The deposit sum in the financial institutions of the whole society reaches 8.64 billion Yuan and the loan sum reaches 5.34 billion.
〖Agriculture〗Agricultural gross output value was 1.403 billion Yuan in 2002, reducing by 1.2% compared with 2001. The exact cultivated area at the end of the year was 42.4 thousand hectares and the sown area of crops was 57.7 thousand hectares, among of which the sown area of cereal crops was 41 thousand hectares while the sown area of industrial crops was 16.7 thousand hectares. The output amounted to 216 thousand tons about 352 kg. per mu yield. The proportion between the two kinds of crops was 1:0.76. The number of pig, cattle and sheep was 194 thousand, and the output of meat, egg, and milk reached 39.3 thousand tons. The total output of aquatic products was 13 thousand tons. Zhaoyuan is the cradle and the largest producing base of Red Fuji Apple all over the countries, so it has been honored with the title of “ The First City of National Red Fuji Apple” and has been listed as the first national high-efficient agriculture demonstration area. The forestry resources in Zhaoyuan are sufficient owning Luoshan National Forest Park. Zhaoyuan has successively won the national level advance honors such as “National virescence Advanced County ”, “National Voluntary Forestation Advanced County”, “National Economic Forest Planting Advanced County” and “National Coastal Shelterbelt System building Advanced County”.
〖Industry〗 The total industrial output value in 2002 realized 24.76 billion , and the output value of distribution was 20.21 billion increasing by 6.255 billion, which realized the profits tax of 2373580 thousand Yuan with profit of 1761820 thousand Yuan. There were 2700 companies in all with 67.8 thousand workers. There are 183 enterprises above the limited quantum that finish industrial added value of 4,950 million Yuan, and realize profits tax of 1,886,880,000 Yuan. There are leading brand products above the province level including Gold Peak Brand padlocks, Liyuan brand bean milk powder, Two Towers brand Longkou vermicelli, Spring Snow brand gold city embroider, Luxin brand spun gold and gold & silver jewelry, Linglong brand tyre, Jinbao brand electronic copper foils and copper clad laminated sheet, Crane brand DSD acid and fluorite brightening agent, Sibao brand Longkou vermicelli, stronghold brand security door and safe.
〖Trade and Tour〗 In 2002, it realized the total volume of retail sales of 3,170 million Yuan of social consumer goods. There are 62 countries fair in urban and rural areas, and the turnover of goods is 1,257 million Yuan. The total import and export value costs 224,910,000 dollars, among which the total export value is 160,420,000 dollars. The Contract utilized 154,250,000 of foreign capitals, and actually utilized 97,200,000 of foreign capitals, approving 36 foreign-investment enterprises. The main scenic spots include Luoshan National Forest Park, Banxian Hole, Holiday Village of Strand, Gold Museum and Hot Spring Tourist Zone. The hot spring distributes heavy in Zhaoyuan, and the water temperature is the highest all over the country. The hot spring abundant in mineral substance and traces which has better curative effect for more than 20 kinds of diseases.
Local famous products
〖Gold〗  Gold resource in Zhaoyuan spread all over the city with the abundant reserves. It has a long exploitation history with the title of “Gold City and Land of Abundance”. Zhaoyuan is the largest gold producing city in the whole country, which is honored with the title of “Gold Capital in China” by China Gold Association in 2002,Jan. Since the reform and opening-up, gold produce in Zhaoyuan has been growing vigorously, making the outstanding contributions for national gold undertaking and local economic development. The output of gold topped 100,000 liang in 1985, 200,000 liang in 1990, 300,000 liang in 1995, and 400,000ling in 2000. The annual production accounts for 1/10 of the whole country. At present, Zhaoyuan could mine and select 3,000,000 tons every year, and the gold exploration, mining, smelting, gold and silver products processing, and mine machine-building connect together to form the intact production system. Zhaojin Group is the largest gold enterprise group at present in Shandong in the aspect of output and scale. In 1998is Zhaojin Group was classified as the key enterprise group by the provincial government of Shandong, and it stepped into 520 key enterprise ranks of country in 1999. In 2002 “Zhaojin” trademarks was named as famous trademark of Shandong Province, and the register of “ Zhaoyuan Gold” origin was examined and accepted by the specialist group from the national quarantine bureau.
〖Longkou Vermicelli〗 Known as “Home of Silver Silk” at home and abroad, Zhaoyuan is the original producing region and main producing region of Longkou vermicelli with more than 300 years’ produce history. In 1860, to separate from other places, Zhaoyuan vermicelli was packed and transported from Longkou instead of exporting from Yantai, so it was originally called “Longkou Vermicelli”. In 1934 China’s industry business magazine record that “ Vermicelli is the local product of Shandong. The vermicelli produced by Zhaoyuan is the most famous …… only the vermicelli produced by Zhaoyuan has the purest material and is trusted by the retailers.” The Longkou vermicelli has a long-standing reputation, so the foreign trade department of Shandong has been continuing to use this name to export all the time after the establishment of our country through which Longkou vermicelli has become the mutual brand of Shandong. However, Zhaoyuan has always been the biggest producing base as the origin of Longkong vermicelli. Longkou vermicelli produced by Zhaoyuan is thin and even, clean and transparent, pliable and tough, and it will not change color and bulge to soak in water for 48 hours.  It is delightful to eat with good taste. Longkou vermicelli has successively won awards such as provincial quality award, ministry quality award, national best and national quality gold medal, China's agricultural exposition gold medal, and national best products compound gold medal. “ Tower brand” Longkou vermicelli has won the award of “Jin Gui Ye” given by International cate and travel association and it is praised as “King of Vermicelli” in the world. At present, there are nearly 200 professional vermicelli manufactures with annual output of 100,000 tons.
〖Songjia Granite〗 Zhaoyuan is abundant with stone resources which mainly distribute in Songjia area with the granite reserve of 13.3 million cubic meters. The exploitation area are 22.8 sq.km.s, and Songjia is praised as" township of the stone". Songjia granite enjoys high reputation in the international market for the characteristic of “hard, natural pattern, and pretty designs”. With the world numbers 383, the stones are sold to more than 30 countries and regions, such as Japan, Singapore, Germany, etc., and it earns foreign exchange more than 2 million Yuan annually. The whole town has 120 stone fields and 805 families who process stones with annual exploitation of 150,000 cubic meters, annual panel process of 5 million square meters and annual stone production of 200,000 square meters. Running through the domestic yellow waterway, Zhang Song road, both sides on the clump road, we tentatively build up the stone materials industrialized country of" one corridor and two districts" of 10 kilometers.
〖Red Fuji Apple〗 Introducing the apple scion of Fuji to graft in 1967, adopting high breeding new technology to grow seedlings fast in 1981, and developing red Fuji apples amount of 6666.67 hectares in 1988, Zhaoyuan became the biggest area of Red Fuji Apple with the highest output all over the country at that time. After the 1990s, it has been regarding science and technology as guide to strongly spread the new technologies to try to improve fruit quality, such as the technologies of orchard cover membrane, grass and bag cover, wall bee pollination, and paving glisten membrane. At the 1st, 2nd and 3rd agricultural expositions after 1994, the Red Fuji Apple with the brand such as “Luguan”, “Zhaoyuan” and “Fuguan” successively won the gold medals.

□Infrastructure Facilities
〖Construction and Environmental Protection〗 Zhaoyuan is a national sanitation city and national environment protection model city. In 2002 it finished the gross fixed assets investment 37.800 million Yuan of the whole society. Capital construction investment was 3. 400 million Yuan, increased by 54 .9%compared with last year. It finished renovation and reformation investment 293 millions, reduced by 9. 4% compared with last year. Gross output value of construction was 749.27million Yuan, realizing the profits tax of 72,310,000 Yuan. The floor space of building construction was 24,810,000 square meters. The gross investment for the prevention and cure of pollution of the whole year was 126 million Yuan, dropped by 3.54% compared with last year.
〖Traffic  Post and Telecommunications〗In 2002, the postal business total amount was 29,590,000 Yuan. The total amount of telecommunication service was 74,350,000 Yuan, including 45 thousand local calls and 110 thousand country calls. All the villages were equipped with electronics, telephones and posts. Wensan Highway crosses the west and east and the Huangshui Highway passes through the north and south. The traffic mileage is 617 kilometers with annual transport goods 5,700,000 tons and the volume of passengers 4,130,000. Yanwei Highway and De-Lai-Long in Zhaoyuan is to open to the traffic.
〖Power supply〗The whole city has 1 transformer substation of 220 KV, 5 transformer substations of 110KV and 14 transformer substations of 35 KV with 38.1,150,000 kilovolt-ampere main capacity. The 110KV electric wire is 115.5km. long, and the 35KV electric wire is 169.3km. long. All of these forms a couple electronic resource distribution network in ring network which regards 220KV as the hinge, and 110KV as the framework. The power consumption of the whole city realized 101 million Kilowatt-hours in 2002, 1776 kilowatt hours power consumption per person, occupying the leading place in the whole province.

□Science, Education, Recreation and Sanitation
〖Education〗  Zhaoyuan is the first batch of “two bases” standard country in education, and the compulsory education advanced counties and cities in the province. Vice-premier Li Lanqing,etc. inspected situation of quality-oriented education successively and named Zhaoyuan as “The source of quality-oriented education”.  In 2002, there were 151 schools of all kinds with 85,000 people, among which there are 72,000 compulsory education students at school, and 6700 teaching and administrative staffs, among which there are 5600 full-time teachers. The first middle school belongs to the advanced group in national education system, and national moral advanced schools in middle and primary schools.
〖Science and technology〗 Zhaoyuan is one of the national scientific and technological progress advanced counties and cities and it ranks 16th among top 100 countries and cities in the nationand al scientific and technological comprehensive strength. In 2002, there were 106 scientific research institutions and 2100 full-time scientific research personnel. 17 scientific findings won the award above the city (region) grade.
〖Recreation and sports〗 Zhaoyuan is the national culture advanced counties and cities, and  the social culture advanced counties and cities of Shandong Province. The masses have rich and varied recreation activities. The cultural groups of the specialty, such as Xinhua Bookstore, troupe, etc. belong to the national advanced unit. The sports work has made brilliant achievements. In1987 the State Sports Committee named Zhaoyuan as the first batch of “National Sports Advanced County" and in 1997 State Physics Head Bureau conferred it the honor of “ national masses' sports advanced group". The proportion of population of rural sports reaches 40%, and worker's sports population reaches 50. 1%. The athletes from Zhaoyuan won the gold and silver medals in internal and international matches. After Sui Xinmei, Wang Riyun, Sui Shunju and so on appeared a large number of international and national-level master sportsmen such as Sun Tianni, Liu Dongfeng, Song Zhaomei, Liang Lili, Song Jianfeng, Chen Weigang, Liu Chunhong, etc who successively became the national-level elites. Two coaches of Zhaoyuan sports school have been honored with the title of “ Beginners’ Coach of the World Champion”. In 2002, there were more than 400 long-term recreation and sports places in the whole city.
〖Sanitation〗 The whole city has formed a tertiary medical treatment and health care of preventing network which regards the city-level health care unit as the center of technological guidance, town-level hospital as the hinge and village clinic as the base. This realize that common diseases could be cured in the village, serious diseases could be cured in the town and the difficult acute diseases could be cured in the city, and Zhaoyuan has become one of the national elementary health care advanced counties and cities. In 2002, there were 19 professional hospitals with 1142 beds and 2277 technical staff of hygiene. Various kinds of medical treatment systems are reformed constantly perfectly, and the rural cooperative medical service has become the national model.

□Social life 
In 2002 the citizens’ saving amounted to 640 million and the number of the people in the countryside who bought social endowment insurance amounted to 87241. The per capita net income of the peasant was 4368 Yuan and per capita living space was 28 square meters. The per capita disposable income of town dweller was 7800 Yuan and per capita living space was 25 square meters. Expenditure relief fund is 3,250,000 Yuan in the whole year.
